Muhammed Bello Buhari is a digital rights activist, researcher, and award-winning fact-checker with a background in law and over five years of experience advocating for internet freedom, social justice, and human rights across Africa. Working at the intersection of law, technology, and civic space, his advocacy focuses on defending digital rights, combating censorship, and shaping inclusive, people-centered digital policy. He currently serves as Programme Intern – Learning & Communications at CIVICUS, supporting the Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI), and previously led global campaigns at Digital Grassroots, advancing digital citizenship in underserved communities.
Muhammed’s work explores internet shutdowns, online repression, and freedom of expression—through fellowships like the Advocacy Assembly’s 2024 Internet Shutdown Activism Fellowship and the Digispace Africa Research Fellowship. He has consulted for fesmedia Africa on media development and digital rights, and contributed to legal aid and public advocacy through Call A Lawyer Nigeria during the #EndSARS protests. His work has earned him several prestigious fellowships, including the 2024 Innocent Chukwuma Social Impact Fellowship at Lagos Business School, the International Republican Institute’s Fortifying Internet Freedom and Digital Security Program, ICIR’s 2025 Countering AI-Enhanced Disinformation Fellowship, and the African Centre for Digital Transformation’s 2025 TechForward Policy Fellowship. He is also a 2025 Internet Society Youth Ambassador, and his writing continues to shape conversations on internet freedom, governance, and digital resilience globally.
